Winning on Fire Bet but losing on Match the Dealer

24 September 2013

FROM JASON: I recently went to my local casino to play craps and I was playing on a table that offers the fire bet. I only had $10 left and $5 was for the pass line bet and I did want to bet that fire bet for $5 but I didn't do it. I had a gentleman next to me on stick right say “Hey, if you hit all six points to win that fire bet I'll give you a hundred dollars." So I said all right that sounds good.

I'm sure glad I didn't roll a crap on my first throw of the dice and I had hit a 6 for my point. The next number I rolled was a 6 so immediately it was a back-to-back win. I hit an 8 for the next point and then I hit a hard 8 for another back-to-back win. The next roll was a 4 and as luck would have it I hit a 4 right back to make three consecutive points!

After three points the fire bet pays $75 for a $5 bet and I was pleased I was half way there to the six points. After I rolled my first point I was making money because the gentleman who offered me money if I hit the six points was giving me $15 and $25 for my odds every point. The gentlemen who was giving me money for odds had bought in with $2,000 so he wasn't a novice at craps.

Well long story short; I had hit five points with the first three being consecutive and I had four repeat points I had made for a total of nine points I made. The only number I needed for the six points to win that fire bet was the 5. After about 45 minutes of holding the dice the dreaded 7 finally showed. Since I hit 5 points the payout for a $5 bet on the fire bet was $750 (lol) not bad right?

The sad part is I wasn't on the fire bet, but I still won money just on my place bets and on the odds. As you can imagine the table did get filled with my monster roll attracting attention. The gentleman who bought in with $2,000 walked away from the table with over $8,000! He didn't give me a $100 but instead gave me $50. He said, "I think that deserves at least 50." I kindly thanked the man because he was placing bets for me and putting odds so I still made close to that $750 he got for that fire bet win.

All in all I was pleased because I started with a measly $10. I'd really appreciate it if you published my story I think it's an awesome craps story. You can shorten the story and edit it to your liking and put in the interesting parts. My name is Jason and I'm from Albuquerque, New Mexico and the casino I was playing at was Route 66 Casino. It's just 20 minutes west of Albuquerque; you should check it out one of these days if you haven't.

They offer 10 times points on table game play and have 20 times odds. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to read my e-mail. Have a great day and may the casino gods be forever in your favor.

FRANK RESPONDS: Yours is a fun story and for many craps players you just lived one of their dreams. I do think readers will enjoy your tale of win (as opposed to a tale of woe) so my book “The Virgin Kiss” is on its way to you.

FROM WARREN: I enjoy your reading your articles. Some casinos have the option on the blackjack table called "match the dealer." Are the odds playing this on a consistent basis in the player’s favor or the house's favor?

Thank you.

FRANK RESPONDS: Theoretically if you could count all the cards and their suits you could play this rule favorably. In reality, it is another side bet that strongly favors the house. Avoid it.
