Will More Practice Improve My Dice Throw?

25 July 2010

By Frank Scoblete

Dear Frank:

Some time ago my son Doug bought your Golden Touch Craps video and I was a silent partner in the deal --- which is another way of saying I paid. In short I built a fine practice rig and practice religiously for about one hour a day for the last seven or eight months.

My question is: I get a run of mid to upper teens or as high as 30 or thereabouts but that is it. Then back to seven or eight runs. Will more practice improve this? Any advice will help.

As you know Pennsylvania's table games will start about July 1st. Any chance you will offer a course say in the Pittsburgh/Erie area?

Ron

Dear Ron:

Although you might control the dice, you will have plenty of runs in the single digits and low teens. Your edge is relatively small and you can expect to see ups and downs. Make sure that your grip is straight across the dice because that is usually the most common problem dice controllers have. If you have one finger higher than another, the dice will separate in the air and one will lead the other. This reduces or eliminates your effectiveness.

Next: Are you keeping track of your SRR (seven to rolls ratio)? Random is 1:6 as there is one seven in six rolls. If you find that you are at 1:6.3 or better you are changing the nature of the game a little. In my latest book Casino Craps: Shoot to Win! I go over all the bets you can make given what levels of SRR you have achieved. After 5,000 rolls you should get a good idea of how good a dice controller you are. And use the Hardway set as that makes it easy to tell if your dice are going off axis too much.

We don't have any classes in Pittsburgh. Here is a list of the remaining classes for 2010.

Chicago: Friday, September 24: Dice Control Tune-ups
Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25 and 26: Dice Control Primer and Refresher Classes

Las Vegas: Friday, October 22: Dice Control Tune-ups
Friday, October 22, Meet and Greet (5:30PM to 8PM)
Saturday & Sunday, October 23 & 24: Dice Control Classes: Primer and Refresher

What I like about your letter is the fact that you practice. As Ted Williams answered when asked how he became such a great hitter: "Practice, practice, practice."

I am giving you a free 30-day subscription to our private member's only web site at www.goldentouchcraps.com. We have over 5,000 members on this site and I think you will enjoy it.
