Why Make a Pass Line Bet When You Can Place the Point Number?

5 August 2007

Dear Frank:

First of all let me comment on what a great site you have and your ability to educate us novices in a way that is enjoyable and educational.

I have been studying and playing craps for about a year and a half now, using the 5-Count and have a question about pass line bets. Why would you want to make a pass line or "put" bet when you can place the point number after it has been made? You get a better return on your wager when factoring in the even money portion of the wager, unless you are wagering over 5 times odds.

I understand the effect of rolling a 7 or 11 on the come-out roll but in utilizing the 5-Count this usually does not factor in unless the roller has made his point and has moved past the 5-Count threshold. Also I usually make the minimum pass line bet and am limited to the amount of odds that can be placed, whereas a place bet on the point number can be for any amount I wish.

Once again thanks for all the information,

Sincerely,
E. D.

Dear E.D.:

This is a great letter and brings up an interesting point about the 5-Count. If the shooter isn't making points, is it better not to use the pass line (or the come) on this shooter? The answer is this - you don't know if this shooter is going to continue to make numbers and not make points. He could start making points right now. Trends in random games are just not predictable.

Okay, let's dismiss the "put" bets because you get no benefit on them as you do on the pass line or come. You are placing a bet that has a flat payout on the "line" part of it. On the pass line and come you get those eight payouts on the come-out roll (with four losers) for a two to one edge.

The 5-Count does not change the nature of the game against strictly random rollers - it just reduces the amount you are betting and the hit on your bankroll. However, if there are controlled shooters at the table the 5-Count will find them with great accuracy. Go here to read a wonderful piece by one of my writers named Skinny: http://www.goldentouchcraps.com/skinny0001.shtml. Skinny shows you exactly how the 5-Count really changes the odds of a craps game.

The only thing place bets give you is the ability to take them off whenever you want. With pass or come betting you can only reduce your odds bets but you must leave up your flat line bet for good or ill. However in a random game you do really pay the price for place bets having to overcome a 6.67 percent house edge on the 4 and 10; a four percent edge on the 5 and 9. The 6 and 8 come in with a decent edge of 1.52 percent.

For your great letter I am giving you a free one-month subscription to my private members-only web site at www.goldentouchcraps.com. This site has over 5,000 members and I think you will find the discussions to be fun and educational as well.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
