Why Is the 6 to 5 Payout Bad?

8 May 2011

By Frank Scoblete

Dear Frank:

I really enjoy your columns. Keep up the good work. I am brand new at blackjack and I noticed that there are two types of games. Those that pay three to two on blackjack and those that pay six to five. Is the increased casino edge that much greater on the six to five game?

Nanny

Dear Nanny:

A simple example suffices. If you are betting $10 and get a blackjack at the traditional game you are paid $15. If you are playing a six-to-five game you are paid $12. That is some big difference. Since you get a blackjack about once every 20 hands, your loss of that extra $3 is significant. Stick to the three-to-two game. The other is a poor choice.
