Dear Mr.Scoblete,
I usually lose money at the craps table, but the fun and excitement keep me coming back, what a game. I happen to read some of your articles about craps and also some of the books you seem to believe will help you enjoy the experience. I finally broke down and bought [a book] and proceeded to read it about six months prior to going to Vegas, and I actually practiced.
I tried using different ways to hold the dice but seem to like the tong.
In Vegas I found some of the lower priced tables and got me a stick left position and shot the dice like I did during practice, hard 10 5s on top 6 to the left and aces to the right. I still don't know exactly how or why but all I threw was 9s and 8s with a few other numbers mixed in. Held the dice for close to 25 minutes and got my place bets up to $54 & $60 and I walked away a winner, more than tripled $100 buy in.
Thought it was just a fluke and tried at another casino and had the same results after a little warm up. Players actually
passed the dice so I could shoot again. After all these years of going to casinos and losing my money I came home a winner after all expenses were deducted for the trip.
Just want to say thanks and ask do you think I should try and move the dice around and hit the horn or should I not get greedy and enjoy my good fortune.
Going to AC the end of April.
Thanks,
Ed
Dear Ed:
Congratulations on your winning trip. However, don't get too confident as one or a few trips is not a real indication of how well you utilize a controlled throw.
I tend to be skeptical of the "tong grip" and have not seen much in the long-run use of it by would-be dice controllers. I know it is an easy grip to use but I am not sure it gives you the stability and accuracy of the "three-finger grip."
Now, forget about the Horn bet or any of what the Captain calls "Crazy Crapper Bets" because they come in with house edges that are immense and are almost impossible for even good dice controllers to beat. Only ploppies make those bets thinking they can overcome them. Stick to the low house edge bets, and your chances of winning increase dramatically.
