Dear Frank:
In a nutshell, here is my dilemma. At the locals casino where I play, there is a very nice but very talkative floorwoman and a really nasty pit boss who just loves to scold and belittle the players. The woman can be a trial because sometimes players don't feel like talking and she will go on and on. But she is a lovely person and she is very generous with the comps. My problem is this: When I am shooting I don't like to talk to anyone. I want to concentrate on my throwing the dice. But she just keeps going on and on. How do I handle that and keep her quiet?
As for the pit boss, he always tells every shooter and I mean every shooter to hit the back wall or he will take the dice away from them. I mean these are guys who play at the casino three or four days a week! He has even stopped the floorwoman from giving comps. One time one old guy asked for the buffet and she said, "No problem!" and the pit boss came over and said, "He hasn't played enough, no comp!" The old guy turned red and so did the floorwoman. How do you handle a guy like that?
Ted
Dear Ted:
Brother, you are caught between a rock and a hard place. I think when you shoot you just ignore her and then after the dice make their way down the table, say to her, "I'm sorry. Did you say something? When I am shooting I concentrate and never hear anything anyone says." This will allow you to ignore her from now on. I think that might help. From your letter I am guessing she is a nice person just hungry for some interaction. Certainly she can't interact with that pit boss.
As for him, ignore him. Be friendly should he talk to you, even if he is scolding or frowning, and agree with him if you can. But if he ruins the game for you, then you have a big problem. There is no sense playing when he is around if you are playing to have fun. It is no fun with a grump. Find out his weekly schedule and schedule yourself around him if you can.
