Tipping casino bellhops and hosts

21 January 2020

FROM JIM:

Hi Frank, I always enjoy your articles. I have a question about your recent Casino City Times article on tipping. I go to Las Vegas and I am not sure how much to tip the bell hops.

When I arrive, I tip the guy who takes our luggage from the car to a holding area. When I am in the room (hours later) I call down and someone else brings the bags to the room.

When you suggested $2 per piece of luggage does this mean $1/piece for the first guy and $1/piece for the 2nd guy or $2/piece for the second guy? I asked a couple of bell hops and both confirmed that they don't share tips. So I'd hate to tip only the guy who brings the luggage because the first guy would bet stiffed.

Your thoughts?

FRANK RESPONDS:

I would give two dollars for each bag for each guy. If you want to save money, travel light. Although I am half kidding, I only use carry-on luggage no matter where I am going or how long I’m staying. But lugging luggage is not the easiest job. I know some individuals who don’t tip them at all. So generosity is appreciated.

FROM CHARLIE:

Frank, I have a simple question about tipping. Should I tip my host? I’ve asked several players that I know and some of them tip their hosts and some of them don’t. From what I understand you are not supposed to give them money but you can give a present of some type.

I am confused and would like your input on this question.

FRANK RESPONDS:

You are right; some players do and some players don’t. If I have a host who over the years has been especially kind to me and one I’ve gotten to know, then I will give him or her a present of some type.

I think your relationship with the host is the key determining factor. The bottom line is that the answer is a “yes” or a “no.” Your choice.

All the best in and out of the casinos.
