The Royal Flushes, Abby and Cindy Royal

8 December 2018

I’ve been asking these two sisters, Abby and Cindy, frequent casino players who have their own philosophies of casino gambling, to start writing occasional articles for this website.

They have said “yes” on the condition that I don’t use their photographs. No problem. Ladies, take the floor:

ABBY: I am happy to share my ideas and experiences. Since I go to the casinos weekly I have had plenty of experiences, some good, some bad, some weird. I kept turning Frank down, but he was very insistent. So here I am!

CINDY: I am happy writing at times too. I go with Abby a lot but I also go alone, sometimes with friends. So I am game.

ABBY: We like to play many of the games, and one of our favorites is craps.

CINDY: It’s a man’s game, even now in the 21st century. Most of the time we are the only women at the table. I remember about 30 years ago many of the players, especially in Atlantic City, were World War II veterans. They sometimes didn’t like women at the tables.

ABBY: Some would actually tell is to go play the slot machines . . .

CINDY: Because that was where women belonged.

ABBY: Most were gentlemen though.

CINDY: Some of the men would buy into the idea that if we were first-time players we’d bring them luck. So we’d pretend that we had never shot the dice before. That made us friends. Of course we’ve been shooting dice for decades.

ABBY: If we had good rolls we were loved all right. If we had bad rolls, well, you know, no one likes bad rolls, which is too bad because most rolls are no big deal. The seven can come up about 17% of the time, so sevening out is always staring you in the face. I think more women should consider playing craps. It’s an exciting game, and there is also occasionally a kind of camaraderie when you play.

CINDY: Except if you are a “don’t” player. I like that Frank [Scoblete] calls them “darksiders” because most “rightside” players can’t stand the “don’t” players. I know we are supposed to look at them as playing against the house just as we are, but something is certainly different about them. In the point cycle of the game they are rooting for the seven, and that is the number that can destroy the rest of us.

ABBY: I don’t care about them, although it is fun to hit the numbers they are betting against and see them lose. OK, maybe I do care. Yeah, I do care. I take back my “don’t care” observation.

CINDY: Maybe we’ll go into the craps players we have played with who are either interesting, weird or out of it in a future article.

ABBY: This has been fun, and we’ll return!
