The craps debate

8 August 2017

There are two extremes when it comes to craps players. The first is the player who lets it all hang out, making every conceivable bet no matter how high the house edge. The second is the player who makes only the best bets at craps and ignores those high house edge bets.

I brought two of them together to see what they would say to each other.

Bulgess: It’s my money and I can bet that money anyway I choose. I want to enjoy the thrill of making bets that pay off a lot, so I bet the hardways and the horn and all the middle of the table propositions.

Conservo: Yes, it is your money and you can bet it any way you choose. I have no problem with that idea but really, why make bets that ultimately will kill you? The way I bet, pass line and come bets – no more than three bets at a time – allows me to lose less when I lose and to keep me in the game over a longer period of time. The house edge when I take the odds is really low. So I make a small pass line and come bet and back it with odds.

Bulgess: How boring, the same bets over and over. On a hot hand I can make loads of money. I have no problem pressing my bets and really going after it.

Conservo: But you lose more in relation to your money. Because you are making such bad bets, yes, you can say you probably win more in a hot hand, but your overall losses wipe those wins out and put you in a long term hole, a deep, really deep hole you will never get out of.

Bulgess: So you aren’t in a hole too? You don’t have any edge. Who are you kidding?

Conservo: I never said I had an edge and over time I am a loser too. But my losses are far lower than yours. I might not make as much as you in a hot roll, but my losses in relation to my bankroll are far lower than yours. It is much easier for me to make a comeback than it is for you.

Bulgess: Don’t you enjoy seeing those chip flow in when a hot roll happens?

Conservo: Yes, but I feel much worse when they flow out, so I bet as I do to avoid getting slaughtered during the bad times.

Bulgess: My philosophy is that we gamble for fun, and I don’t have fun unless I have a lot of chances to really dig in and go for it. I just don’t see me wasting time at a craps table making the dull bets. I would rather not play.

Conservo: I think that I have as much fun as you. The fact that I am making good bets doesn’t reduce my pleasure at playing.

Bulgess: We are coming from two different places, that’s all.

Conservo: I should say that we could find a middle ground, but I would never bet the way you do.

Bulgess: And I would never bet the way you do.

Well, folks, there you have it, the extremes. Most players actually fit somewhere on the continuum between these extremes. My opinion is simple. I go along with Conservo. Keeping losses as low as possible allows a comeback that actually allows you to come back. I do not think that Bulgess realizes the amount of money he loses betting as he does.

Still, to each his own.
