Surrender is good

28 May 2013

Dear Frank:

First of all, thanks for providing a great site for the recreational gambler. I am sure there is a more politically correct term for us but that is what we are.

I live in Florida now but visit relatives in Delaware and PA often. While in Delaware, I like to play at Delaware Downs because the blackjack game there offers surrender and I tell my poker buddies that this is a big advantage for the player. They say it is not a big deal and that the player doesn't gain any advantage since by surrendering; you give up any chance to win. I say that when I have a hard 15-16 and the dealer is showing a 10, a surrender is a good strategic bank-saving move. Just that the casino is offering another option on the table should be a plus. Whadda ya think?

Also, I enjoy playing Pai Gow Poker but was surprised that at $25 a hand, the comps are non-existent. I guess the casino doesn't like all those pushes. Don't they make enough money on the game to throw a few comps to the players?

Jack in JAX

Dear Jack:

Surrender is a great option if used wisely. Each game will have a little bit of a different strategy for which hands to surrender but usually 15-16 versus a 10 can be considered a surrender hand.

As for Pai Gow Poker, at $25 per hand I am guessing the casinos where you play just don’t see the profitability in such a bet. Had you been betting $100 or $200 (or more), the comps would come. Pai Gow is a somewhat slow game with many pushes and this is probably why a $25 player is no big deal. However, who cares? Played properly Pai Gow can be beaten. In my new book “Everything Casino Poker: Get the Edge at Video Poker, Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Lo and Pai Gow Poker!” we show you exactly how to turn the tables on the casino in this game.

For your letter I am sending you a free copy of my book “The Virgin Kiss.”

All the best in and out of the casinos!

Dear Frank:

I just read an article of yours from 2006 on bankroll for craps, the URL is http://scoblete.casinocitytimes.com/article/proper-bankroll-for-craps-31134.
I like the suggestions about the 401G, a great idea.

I was wondering where you came up with the figure of 10 times your spread? Is this intuition and experience or have you run a mathematical analysis on this? I've found a few ROR calculators online but none of them seem very good - any extra insight you have would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Peter

Dear Peter:

In a random game I wanted to give players enough money to enjoy themselves but not too much that should things head downhill these players would get destroyed. That’s where I came up with the figure.

For your letter, I am sending you a free copy of my book “The Virgin Kiss.”

All the best in and out of the casinos!
