Slots, snits and nitwits

19 August 2014

FROM MARK: I just heard this one: "If in Las Vegas, play the slots at 11 at night because they have to meet a minimum payout each day."

FRANK RESPONDS: Tell the person who told you this piece of information that there is a bridge that connects Brooklyn to Manhattan that is for sale cheap. But it must be bought between the hours of 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.

FROM PAULIE: I have to tell you this, Frank. I get very annoyed at blackjack players who tell other players what to do. Even if another player is playing stupidly it is the player’s money and he can play it as he wants. I think most blackjack players think there is some magical organization principle involved in how the cards are distributed in the shoe and if someone plays poorly that organization becomes bad for the player. I am amazed at how many players believe this.

FRANK RESPONDS: Ignore the people who can’t seem to ignore the people. You’ll never convince them they are wrong. Play the game and enjoy yourself. I am sending you one of my two recent books, “Confessions of a Wayward Catholic” or “The Virgin Kiss.” You choose.

FROM NICK: I was at my local casino the other day and when I went to the cashier to cash my winning tickets, she had me sign the tickets. I ask her why I would have to sign these three tickets since they were only worth $195, $215 and $125. She said when the tickets were printed, the machine was offline. What does this mean?

My wife wanted to leave and I had $157 left on the machine. Instead of cashing out I played it out, losing it all. What I do is put $20 in the machine and if I get over $150, I cash out and put another $20 in. I started with $100 so I had five runs at it and cashed out three tickets. I really should have cashed out four but like I said I played out the $157.

Again, what did she mean when she said the machine was offline? I really had a chance of losing all my money because the machine was offline and how do I know when a machine is online?

Thanks in advance.

FRANK RESPONDS: I’m guessing she meant the machines were not recording the wins/losses or some such. Or I haven’t got the faintest idea of what she meant.

Sometimes casino employees do not articulate what they mean thus making the situation un-understandable. I am guessing you signed the tickets, since that would be the way to get the money.

I am sending you one of my new books, either “Confessions of a Wayward Catholic” or “The Virgin Kiss.” You choose.
