Skipping the Passline Bet

31 March 2005

By Frank Scoblete

Mr. Scoblete,

Is it alright not to bet on the initial Pass Line? Can I just wait for the come-out roll and then put money on the place numbers (i.e., 6, 8, etc.) after the come roll is determined?

Thank you,
Exequiel

Dear Exequiel:

Casinos prefer not to limit your betting options because the more you bet the better it is for them. So the Pass Line bet is not a must. You can place the numbers after the shooter establishes his point. However, the Pass Line wager and the Come wagers and their opposites the Don't Pass and Don't Come have the lowest house edges. If you like to make place bets, then just stick with the 6 and 8 as they have a 1.5 percent house edge on them.

The only exception to the above is if you are the shooter. Then you must have a Pass Line or Don't Pass bet in order to be given the dice.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
