Playing the Darkside

4 January 2007

By Frank Scoblete

Frank:

I just read and enjoyed your column "Playing the Darkside" and how you typically don't go there. I, on the other hand, am a regular Darkside player and you'll usually find me around the corner of the table by the pit placing my Don't Pass bet ever so quietly awaiting the inevitable 7. Sort of like the Grim Reaper. Actually, I've never detected any scorn from other players, but the dealers sure enjoy making a point of it.

If I may, I'd like to share my strategy for Darkside play and I'd welcome your comments.

First, I look for tables with mostly random shooters. Any dice setter could be "Golden", so best to avoid the angst. Second, I have found that it is relatively rare for a random shooter to hit four points, so as sort of an application of the Five-Count principle, I won't bet until someone is shooting for their third point number. I don't place odds, for it results in a greater potential loss to make up. Third, when it comes around to me to shoot I pass the dice. It's kind of weird to bet against yourself.

Fourth, I drink water. Last thing I want to do is impair my money management judgement.

That's about it. I look at it this way: if the casino won't let you remove a Pass bet but will let you remove a Don't Pass bet should you change your mind, then that action speaks louder than words. They know that once you get past the Come Out roll the odds are now in my favor, and they don't like it. I can live with that. And, I usually live a lot longer at the tables as well. Just not as loudly.

Keep the great articles coming!

Martin

Dear Martin:

I like your strategy because you really reduce the hit on your bankroll by waiting for the shooter to make three points. It is a kind of 5-Count on the Darkside. And you are absolutely right that the house knows you are in the driver's seat once you are on a number because the game now shifts to your favor in a big way.

I am giving you a free month on our members only web site at www.goldentouchcraps.com and I am reprinting your letter on my site www.scoblete.com at www.casinocitytimes.com.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
