Monster Mash

8 November 2016

I have certain predilections when it comes to playing games in the casinos, and the biggest one has to do with the number of people playing when I want to play.

I do not like crowded casinos, crammed with people who are drinking, eating, talking, drinking some more, loudly voicing their joy or misery over what is happening to them as if others of us give two cents that they lost their last dollar.

Take craps, a great game, and the one that I would say is the most exciting game in the casino. Most craps players enjoy being at a semi-full or full table so they can cheer, slap each other five when things go right or moan and curse when things go wrong. Not me. Give me a craps table with three, maybe four other players – players who prefer to remain somewhat silent and introspective, meaning they aren’t looking to talk into my nose sharing their garlicky-winey breath as the denizens of the evening will do.

I don’t mind a couple of other players at blackjack, but please, no experts! I don’t want to be at a table where some loudmouth is always telling the rest of us how to play properly. (By the way, usually the loudmouths have only a vague handle on how to play properly.) Small conversation? OK, not too bad. But I really don’t want a floor person to come over to grill me about my job, my family, my education or my weight (yes, one once asked me how much weight I had gained since college). Just leave me alone and let me enjoy playing. If I need a floor person, I’ll ask for one.

Let’s get back to loud. I am not a fan of loud people, particularly loud people who are also drunk people, and particularly loud drunk people who also think they are funny. Generally, drunk people are not funny, and generally, loud drunk people are even less funny than someone who isn’t funny to begin with.

I don’t like being jostled. Having lived in New York City, I hated being on public transportation during rush hour because you had to became too darn familiar with the people rubbing up against you. In a crowded casino, you’re always bumping into people who you often wish were dozens of miles away from you.

So when do I like to play? I prefer the early mornings just after (almost) all of the drunks have staggered out of the casino; somewhere around five or six. A couple of hours in the morning and I generally get my gambling fix for the day. The rest of the time I enjoy doing other things. Casinos and especially casino towns usually have a host of fun things you can do. So I do them.

Yes, there are times when I will play in the afternoon for a while and there are also times (fewer times) when I might play at night. But give me the morning. Even in my writing career I prefer working those early hours.
