Manners at slot machines

22 October 2019

Unlike games such as blackjack, where some players think they are obliged to tell you how to play your hands, even if these “experts” have no real idea of the correct basic strategy; or craps, where players dislike it when other players take care with their rolls; or roulette, where players bump your hand as you are trying to make your bets so they can make their bets; or baccarat, with its players who stare and fume if they are playing the opposite of the hands you are playing because you are winning your hands and they are losing their hands; the slot world does have its mores and manners.

Here are some:
  • Do not play more than one machine if the casino is crowded and people are waiting to play. Doing so is rude. It is also stupid, because you are possibly doubling the casino hit on your bankroll.
  • Do not ask a player, “Are you finished playing that machine yet?”
  • Do not try to strike up a conversation with a player who seems intently watching the screen. It is more than likely this player does not want to talk to anyone.
  • Do not ask a person how much money they have won or how much money they have lost. That’s really bad manners, just like asking someone what their salary or earnings are.
  • Do not jump onto a machine that has a saved sign on it. Until the casino attendant frees the machine, it is taken – otherwise people couldn’t go to the bathroom and my fear is that casino carpeting could get very, very messy.
  • Do not complain about your losses. Other players might be polite but no one really cares if you lost money. They are concerned with their own money.
  • Do not brag about your wins. Aside from making someone who was just hammered feel even more awful, winning has nothing to do with your greatness as a person or as a player. Slots are random and an ape who knew enough to push the play button could win too. So do not display your wins on your wings as if you were a peacock.

Although in some ways casino playing can be a joint experience, more often than not players are in their own worlds and don't want to be approached. In short, they are in their own zone and probably don't want any visitors.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
