Just Ask Scobe and AP

29 November 2002

Dear Scobe and AP:

Here's my story. In my last five visits to the casinos, I have lost each and every time. When I play blackjack, the dealer invariably beats my 20 with a 21, often making wild draws of little cards. Or I constantly bust. At craps, as soon as I put my money on the table, the shooters seven out. I am beginning to think that the casino games are not on the up and up. Is it possible that I am being cheated? Would the casinos ""rig"" the games? I've heard of such things happening. My bets are generally around $25. Do casinos cheat?

DW

Dear DW:

Not in in any state-regulated casino. Not only are there laws protecting the consumer -- in this case, the gambler -- from nefarious practices, casino executives/owners would have to be out of their minds to cheat players. Remember that the casinos already have structured the games in such a way that they have edges on just about every game and every machine, and they have an edge on just about every individual bet at every game. Why cheat? That house edge is more than enough to assure that casinos will make a profit. How much can they make trying to cheat you? Maybe you have a bankroll of $10,000. Would a casino that makes millions in a month really need to take your $10,000 in one lump sum? It's going to ultimately get it anyway!

What you are experiencing is what the mathematicians call a fluctuation in probability and what we mortals call -- bad luck!

Both of us have had similar experiences in casinos where it seems almost supernatural how a blackjack dealer can, time and time again, pull just the right card out of the deck or shoe -- seemingly at will -- to beat whatever hand we have. Yet, if you play long enough, you'll notice that some nights it is just the opposite. The dealer busts and busts and/or we make winning hands constantly. That is the nature of games of chance, they are streaky and sometimes those really bad (or good) streaks can be really freaky.
