How would you play $500 in free table play?

14 June 2009

Hi Frank,

You are a straight shooter. Question: If you had say four or five hundred in free table play, how would you max that out? Would you just play safe and go red and black, covering the 00 and 0, or pass, don't pass covering the 12 and settle for half?

Or would you play the 6 and 8 and just let them ride until they hit?

Other ways are blackjack - (iffy) -

Would I be stupid to just let the don't pass bet ride? The problem seems to be that you cannot take them down when you want to. I usually bet the don'ts and hedge with a no ten. After the point I take the no-ten down. With free play this bet has limitations.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
R.R.

Dear R.R.

The math says take all of that $400 or $500 and bet it on one thing. In short, don't break it up. Since most of these free table-game coupons only allow you to bet on even-money propositions, you can't do place bets at craps or anything that returns more than $1 to $1.

OK, while the math says just make one bet, it is hard for players to follow the math in these cases — most players want to win some money with these coupons. If you are one of those, then go to baccarat and make a Bank bet for $25 over and over until you run out of money. You should win something betting the Bank at bac. The house edge on Bank is less than a pass or don't pass at craps and way less than the red/black, high/low or odd/even wagers at roulette. Now, you could do blackjack but if they don't pay three-to-two on a blackjack but even money then you are giving them an edge that is higher than the Bank at baccarat.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.
