How much to tip slot attendants and when to parley bets

17 September 2013

FROM VINNY: In April of this year my wife hit a major jackpot on the U-SPIN slot machine. She won $9,500. She gave the attendant $100 as a tip. Is there a certain percentage that you should tip an attendant based on the amount you win on a slot machine or is it at the discretion of the player?

FRANK’S RESPONSE: Any tip is up to the discretion of the slot player – in fact, you do not have to tip at all unless the slot attendant has given you some good service. That $100 was more than generous in my estimation. I hope your wife got a big hug and a bigger thank you.

I am sending you a copy of my new book “The Virgin Kiss” for your letter.

FROM JASON: I am long-term gambler for 10 years who loves craps. And I also have a degree in statistics, so I'm not a believer of trends or superstition. I'm also a good poker player, but I still love craps despite that fact that I know it is a house game, but I just enjoy the randomness and excitement. I do think this game can be beat, but one can't do it without thousands hours of practicing, and most importantly, discipline.

I'm serious when I play, I put full odds, only bet even numbers, never bet the center. My weakness is when at the table and losing early, I will totally forget the principles of money management, and I will go with the random superstition; and I will increase my bet trying to win it back fast. Which often led to huge losses.

I don't think I'm alone here, as I've seen tons of people, losing their bankroll instantly this way; hoping to catch the "hot" streak after so many "cold" ones, only to lose everything on the next 7 out.

I saw your video of "Breaking Vegas" and I am very impressed. There is finally someone who has figured this out, and does it legally!

I will buy your book "Casino Craps Shoot to Win" and learn from it. I'm sure it will be an eye-opening read.

I hope we can meet sometime. I come to Vegas often. I play at the downtown casinos usually as they have better games. I like to stay in the Golden Nugget.

FRANK’S RESPONSE: Players get caught up in their losses and trying to recoup their money by betting bigger is a major problem in a game such as craps. It is courting doom. You have to not try to get any money you lost back; play the proper way no matter what happened in the past.

FROM MIKE: I just finished "Casino Craps: Shoot to Win!" and am going back through and highlighting key points. I feel it is the "bible" of controlled shooting.

One subject I still have questions about is when do you take profits? I have been practicing on my homemade receiving station for about a month, and each day usually get a roll in the 20s once per session. A few times into the low 30s. I am buying Smart Craps soon. I may apply the 5-Count to myself when I start in casino play, to reduce the amount of times I throw point-7 out.

I am starting to see the wisdom of the 6 and 8 place bets, and letting them parlay a few times to build up some profits on a longish roll. So, my question for you, with all your actual experience, is when do you pull it down and bank it? Do you ever let it parlay all the way to the table maximum? When you place the 4 and 10 for $25 each, do you buy them right away?

Thanks for your book. It's still out there doing good and teaching!

FRANK’S RESPONSE: I do not increase my bets until I have a substantial profit. I tend to bet high on myself – if I have an edge I want to bet that edge right away – so I need a long roll before I start to parley some of the bets. I always buy the 4 or 10 but only in casinos that take the vig out of wins.

I also tend to bet the Come even more than Placing numbers. I only bet one bet on random rollers who have made it through the 5-Count.

When you go to the casino for the first time and use dice control, you will be nervous. My advice is to bet small and think of your first casino visits as practice with small money.

I am sending you a copy of my new book “The Virgin Kiss” for your letter.
