Hedging at Craps

10 January 2008

Dear Frank:

What's the possibilty of playing the don't come bet for $100 and playing only the 4, 5, 9, 10, and matching that on the place bet line? Then, a person cannot lose - either come out even - OR can win either $80 on the 4 or 10, or $40 on the 5 or 9. On the 6 or 8, he would either lose or win $20?

Sincerely,
Bob

Dear Bob:

Sorry, it doesn't work the way you think it works. That first bet of $100 is a loser at approximately $1.38 every time you place it because that is the house edge - 1.38 percent. If it lands on the 6 and 8, then you remove those bets, you have risked $100 with house getting 8 to 3 on the come-out but you have no prayer to win the bet if it lands on the 6 or 8. That is a bad betting practice.

When the number is 4, 5, 9 and 10, that is great for you - but again, you will lose overall because of the 1.38 percent house edge. There is no way to get around this situation.

Now, placing the bets has the same problem because you will lose 6.67 percent of all the money you bet on the 4 and 10; and 4 percent on all the money you bet on the 5 and 9. Bets do not wipe each other off - they wipe you out.

The way to look at hedge betting, which is what you are doing, is to figure the house edge on each individual bet - and that tells you what you will lose. That's why a casino can win money on a right side bettor and a don't bettor playing at the same table at the same time. The casino has the edge on every bet (except the odds bet) and that is, as they say, that.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
