Hedge betting at craps

4 November 2007

Dear Frank,

My question is when you first get to a casino and find the craps table you want to play at and it's time for you to place first bet, this is where it gets complicated for me.

Let me start the steps:

(1) Give the dealers your players card and cash in. NOW the Pit Boss or Boxman is watching to see how much money you are going to bet so he can log it in their log.

(2) The question is how to Place a hedge bet so it looks like you're a bigger player than you are? (Do you know what I am trying to say?)

What I am thinking is that instead of being logged by the casino as a 15 dollar player (let's say the casino table is a 15 dollar minimum bet table), can I make a "hedge bet" where I put say 15 dollars on the pass line and 30 dollars on the don't pass line to make it seem to the casino that I am rated as a 45 dollar bettor to the casino rather than a 15 dollar bettor?

I am not sure if you can bet pass and don't pass at the same time on the come-out roll.

How can I make this type of hedge bet to make it seem like I am a bigger bettor (for more comps) than I actually am? I know the first bet is the most crucial for the casino to rate you and I understand the hedge bet is the best for accomplishing this rating.

Frank, I hope you get the gist of what I'm asking and how I am thinking of doing it to accomplish the higher rating without actually risking all the money (in my example above of risking 45 dollars while in actuality I am only risking 15 dollars but the casino logs me as a 45 dollar player rather than a 15 dollar player).

I not sure if this is allowed on the come out roll. Would you please explain the proper and professional way of doing this.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely,
Robert

Dear Robert:

If you bet $15 on the Pass and $30 on the Don't Pass, you are a $45 player and the casino has an edge over that $45 dollars so the casino will surely rate you as a $45 player. Why is that? Because you are risking that $45 - with, sadly, a $45 player's losses as well.

You see there is no real hedge here. In fact, there are no real hedges in all of craps - hedge betting is an illusion - go to http://www.goldentouchcraps.com/WeeklyArticles/21.shtml and this starts a four-part series on all forms of hedge betting.

You will lose 21 cents on the Pass Line bet and you will lose about 40 cents on the Don't Pass bet for a combined loss of 61 cents. So your betting idea merely costs you more money.

You cannot fool the pit into thinking you are betting more because you are betting more money. This way of betting only fools yourself.

If you really want to get more comps than your betting is worth than I recommend that you play the 5-Count. This method will eliminate 57 percent of all the random rolls at craps. Go here for a description of what the 5-Count can do for you: http://www.goldentouchcraps.com/proof.shtml

For your great letter I am giving you a free month on my private, members only board at www.goldentouchcraps.com. There are over 5,000 members on this private, members only board and the discussions are fascinating, educational and fun.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
