Follow-up to the Card-Reading Shuffle Master Machine

21 December 2008

By Frank Scoblete

Mr. Scoblete:

Years ago I heard that microchips were being put into playing cards. But I don't understand the reasoning to your statement dated 12/7/08: "Shuffle Master does have an eight-deck shoe that can read the cards - it is used primarily for baccarat." What would be the reason for this with all of the cameras around?

Sincerely,
Phil

Dear Phil:

Cheaters can sometimes put cards into play that will favor them. By reading the cards in the shoe, this machine can tell if the decks have been set up to help the players. Casinos want random shuffles. I guess it is just an extra measure of security.
