Don't be afraid

25 July 2017

Many new casino players suffer from a strong case of fear, particularly when it comes to playing table games. Can they learn the game and play the strategies properly? This is especially true for blackjack, which has innumerable decisions to make, and craps, which has an amazing number of bets that can be wagered.

Other players are a fear factor as well. What if they see you are a novice and laugh or groan when you make a mistake in play? What if they give you advice; should you follow it? If you don’t, will they be offended? If you do, is this advice actually any good?

With a wealth of terror in their hearts as they think of sitting or standing at a table, new players will often scurry right to the slot machines, which do not judge and that have little or no decisions to make. They can even disappear in the slot aisles and few players will even know they are playing.

When you play a machine, the machine does not tell anyone how good or bad you play. Machines have no feelings about you or about themselves. They are lifeless objects. Such is a relief to new players and is probably one reason, perhaps the major reason, why slot machines earn 65 to 90 percent of the casino revenue in various venues.

However, I think new players should give the table games a try. If you want to play blackjack, go to the casinos stationary store and it will probably have a basic strategy chart that will tell you what to do with each hand versus every dealer up-card. Use this, even if you slow the game down a bit, because that strategy will actually make you a strong player, far stronger than most of the other players with whom you’ll play.

Craps is not a hard game. Yes, there are a multitude of bets, but most of them are not good wagers. Don’t listen to the other players yelling out their wagers – most of these wagers are sucker bets. Instead, ask the dealer how to play the Pass Line and just use that one bet. The Pass Line is a great bet.

At Pai Gow Poker or any of the “carnival games,” the strategies are relatively simple. When you get to play your hand, just ask the dealer what you should do or ask the dealer, “What does the book say to do?” The dealers will tell you the proper way to play.

Baccarat, mini-baccarat and roulette are quite simple. With mini-baccarat try to make your decisions slowly because it is a relatively fast game – actually it is a very, very fast game. There are only two bets from which to decide – the “player” or the “banker.” Bet one of the other. Do not bet the “tie.”

At roulette stick to one small outside bet; be that bet red or black; high or low; odd or even. Don’t get caught up in trying to win those inside bets which can often cause long losing streaks even though the house edge on these bets is usually the same as the house edge on the outside bets.

If you find that playing table games does not give you the thrills you seek, then scurry on over to the slot machines. They aren’t going anywhere.
