Do casinos use software to control the outcomes of the games?

29 October 2011

Hello Frank,

I have read some of your online blogs in regards to casinos and their advantage with casino games. I am convinced that casinos use computer systems and software to control the outcome of the games, giving the casinos an unfair advantage over the customer.

How do I know this? I was a high roller at several casinos and have come to the conclusion that casinos know the big-money players from the average joes. It seems that no professional players are willing to attest to this proclamation for fear of reprisal from casinos.

I am not against gambling. I am discontent about casinos not fully disclosing to weary customers that the games are controlled beyond the laws of nature and the law of averages. I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my e-mail.

DF

Dear DF:

The only computer systems being used by the casinos are on slot machines and video games. Everyone knows that these are programmed to give out less money than they take in. So I don't think there is any hanky-panky going on there, because there doesn't have to be.

The table games run strictly according to the math of the game in their results, and the casino makes its money by either winning more decisions or short-changing the payouts. They do not change the randomness of the games. (Blackjack is slightly different as the cards that have been dealt affect which cards remain in the shoe.)

So despite the fact that you are suspicious of the casinos, I do not think they are changing the nature of the games since, again, they don't have to. The casinos have the edge and every player knows the casinos have the edge.

What many players don't realize is that small edges become big wins for the casinos over time and big wins for the casinos means big losses for players who play a lot. Most casino players experience such losses and become suspicious of the casinos' ability to ultimately hammer them.

The truth is -- at least as I see it -- the casinos are not cheating or using computers to screw the players even more than their edges normally do.

I just put you on my private website at www.goldentouchcraps.com. Please feel free to post. We have over 5,000 members and the conversations are great.

Enjoy!
