Can You Be Successful in Craps Without Being a Controlled Shooter?

29 March 2009

By Frank Scoblete

Dear Frank:

I have read your book Beat the Craps out of Casinos dozens of times. I must admit it has enlightened me on the beauty of the game of craps. Since reading your book I have been to Vegas three times (over nine months) and I have religiously followed the 5-Count.

The first time I played I was able to come out a little ahead. The second time I was a little down but it was a struggle and I was not able to play at the tables that long. This last trip, a week ago, I lost half my stake and was barely at the tables for more than three hours over a three-day period.

I do not roll and I am thinking I might need to learn how to become a controlled shooter to stay at the table longer. I bet conservatively using the Limited Bankroll approach (place the 6 & 8 for $30 each) even though my bankroll permits high roller betting limits.

I am not at the tables long enough to catch a hot roller even with the 5-Count, my numbers were hit a total of five or six times all this last weekend....brutal.

Can you actually be successful in the game of craps without being a controlled shooter? The last two times to Vegas were brutal in terms of rollers and making any money. Any suggestions?

Yours truly,
Michael

Dear Michael:

Even with the 5-Count, you can't overcome the house edge on the bets that you make against random rollers. The 5-Count will reduce the number of random rolls you face by 57 percent. If there happens to be a controlled shooter at the table the 5-Counter will bet on him 11 percent more than the player who bets on every shooter. Now as far as your three trips are concerned; you won a little, lost a little and then had your head handed to you. That's craps. You can't expect to win every time out, especially since you are playing a random game. You are making - and this is a good thing - some of the best bets, so the hit on your bankroll is not as large as it would be if you were making high house-edge bets.

The only way to beat the game of craps is to become a Golden Touch controlled shooter. Still even with the ability to influence those cubes, you have to bet properly as you are doing.
