California dreaming and women's purses

22 October 2013

FROM ALAN: Aloha, Frank. I'm from Hawaii and get to Vegas about three or four times a year. I have read a few of your books and am an advocate of your precision rolling techniques and theories.

My question is, when being rated on craps, what bets are taken into account for the total spread? Also does this differ by properties or ownership? I usually stay at Planet Hollywood.

By the way, I enjoyed reading your article on your vacation to Hawaii at http://frankscoblete.com/travel/fear-and-loafing-in-hawaii-by-frank-scoblete/. I hope you get to come back soon. Aloha.

FRANK'S RESPONSE: There may be some small differences among casinos about rating players but usually the Odds bets are not a part of the ratings. Those bets such as Pass and Come will not garner the kinds of comps that the Crazy Crapper bets such as the Yo, the Hardways or others would accumulate. Obviously the poorer the player, the better the comps.

I loved Hawaii. The people were friendly; the weather was beautiful and I now know why it is called a paradise.

I am sending you a copy of my book “The Virgin Kiss” for your letter.

FROM JACK: I happened to be in the Los Angeles area, what type of positive play do they have here that Las Vegas does not have? I would like to explore new things here. I heard casinos here have different type of games and casinos laws compared to Las Vegas.

I heard Pai Gow can be beaten. Is that in every state or only in some states? I think it’s like playing as banker or something like that. How do you play as banker and how do you play every single game as banker with crowded tables, as it seems like it’s only a positive game if you can play as banker every game. It seems like the house edge is too big playing as player. How do you ask to become a banker? Besides that any other way Pai Gow can be beaten?

A long time ago, I think in California, I heard some people can invest their bankroll money in California casinos, they can play positive play while sleeping at home, the casino makes money on commissions and provides the dealers and building, the investors supply the gambling bankroll and make money off player errors and banker’s edge (I think something like that), I heard that story many years ago. The questions is, is that true? Are there opportunities I can still invest today? Does that still exist? If yes what state is it in?

FRANK’S RESPONSE: There are some different games in California but I don’t know all of them as some come in and go out rather quickly. There are no regular roulette games or craps games as gambling with wheels or dice is illegal (idiotic rule). To counteract this, the casinos have instituted roulette games and craps games using cards. As far as traditional card games, you’ll find about all the popular ones including blackjack, Pai Gow Poker, Three-Card Poker, regular poker, Let It Ride, Spanish 21, Caribbean Stud and others. Of course, you’ve also got slots and video poker.

Pai Gow can be beaten. You do not have to be the Banker on every single hand. If you can bank 50 percent of the time – and in many this is allowed – and the other players have an approximately 13-to-1 betting average against you, the game becomes positive. I have a whole section in my new book “Everything Casino Poker: Get the Edge at Video Poker, Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Lo and Pai Gow Poker” on the best playing strategies for this game. Pai Gow Poker is a fun card game.

Your third question? I have no idea if what you heard is true or just a myth. You can, of course, buy casino stock and then you would be an “owner” in a very, very, very (add some more verys) limited way.

FROM BILL: I read and enjoy your regular e-mail. I am shocked by the letters you shared in "Strange Letters from Stranger People." While I found these letters entertaining, I have to question whether these letters were sent in by real people or have been created/modified to add a little bit of humor.

If these are unmodified letters, I think we may conclude that the U.S. education system is in need of a major overhaul.

FRANK’S RESPONSE: The U.S. education system is in need of a major overhaul. Oh, and you should see some of the racy pictures some women send me – there are a lot of unmodified nuts out there. Send me your address and I will send you a free copy of my book “The Virgin Kiss.”

FROM JAYEL: I have gambled in casinos in Nevada, Missouri, Indiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. Ohio is the only state where the security at the door makes all women open their purses so they can look inside. Why?

Men don't have to empty their pockets on their cargo pants, but women have to let them nose around in their purses. I have my money, gambling cards and personal items and I don't appreciate security screaming at the top of their lungs, "She has a sock monkey! This lady has a sock monkey!" This happened at a Cleveland casino and I swear everyone on the first floor knew about my "good luck" monkey. What's next? TSA patdowns?

Thanks, I enjoy your column.

FRANK’S RESPONSE: Oh, my Lord, you have a sock monkey! Everyone, she has a sock monkey! Just kidding. I guess the casino figures you can smuggle a gun or bomb in your purse, although it seems to me men can get a gun or small bomb past security in their pockets just as easily. Maybe the men should have to empty their pockets as everyone must in airports.

I am sending you a free copy of my book “The Virgin Kiss” for your letter. You have my permission to let the sock monkey read it.
