Ask Frank: Taking Down a Don't Pass Bet

Dear Frank,

I have been playing craps for some time and saw something I've never seen before. The man next to me had a bet on the don't pass line. The point thrown was a 6. He removed his bet off the don't pass and moved it to don't come. Have you ever seen this move? He said he does it all the time.

Dear Marty,

The casino allows you to take down your bet on the Don't Pass and the Don't Come because once these bets are actually on a number, the player has a big edge.

The man who removed his 6 Don't Pass bet was nervous because next to the 7, the 6 (and 8) have the highest probability of showing (five in 36 for the 6 and 8 to six in 36 for the 7). He took his bet off, hoping that when it was placed on the Don't Come, he would get up on another number that didn't have the frequency of appearance like the 6 or 8. In strictly math terms, he made a big mistake as he is still the odds on favorite to hit a 7 before a 6.
