Ask Frank

10 August 2002

Dear Frank:

I was one of your subscribers before your news letter ended - I miss it.

Anyway, I just finished re-reading Forever Craps and Beat the Craps Out of the Casino and have a couple questions.

1. You note in your books that the Super System actually gives the house a slightly higher mathematical edge (2.78 vs. 1.41) due to the 12 showing. However, once you are up on your numbers, the 12 cannot hurt you so it seems that the impact of the 12 over a specific roll would be less than the 2.78%. Kind of like your explanation of the roll as having two parts - before the point is made and after it is made. Have you looked at the total mathematics of the Doey Don't System?

2. In one of your books you took a question regarding laying odds on the Don't Come portion of the Super System bet during the Come Out roll. You mentioned that you might investigate that variation further. Have you put together any additional information on this?

Best regards and I am looking forward to receiving my recently ordered copy of Get the Edge at Craps.

Dear Peter:

I enjoyed doing the newsletter and thought it was a quality product. Unfortunately, when my wife got ill, it became impossible for me to continue. I miss it, too.

As to question #1: The doey-don't actually serves a purpose that is not reflected in the math of the game. If you have rhythmic rollers who can reduce the appearance of the 7, then betting straight Pass Line or Come will not necessarily be the optimal way to play. After all, the power of the Pass Line or Come bet comes from the appearance of the 7 (and, to a much lesser degree, the 11) in the Come-Out and initial Come-placement part of the game. If you speculate that a shooter has reduced the 7 on the Pass/Come, then it is quite possible that the doey-don't has a lower vig overall when you take part two, the point cycle, into consideration. The point cycle is an entirely different game. Once up on a doey-don't, the casino has no edge on the bet. I have not, however, figured out just how much the appearance of the 7 has to be reduced to make doey-don't a better mathematical proposition than the traditional Pass and Come.

As to question number 2, I'm a creature of habit and I just dropped the issue. I have become more of a Place bettor in recent years as my "rhythmic roll" has become stronger than in the past and I have certain numbers that I tend to hit. I go right up on them now - not even utilizing the 5-Count. It did sound like a good idea, however, and if you've experimented with it, let me know what you think.

Get the Edge at Craps: How to Control the Dice! will be out in September - it's well worth the wait!

All the best in and out of the casinos!
Frank
